CAPTAINS UPDATE APRIL 2024

CAPTAINS UPDATE APRIL 2024

As we approach the start of the season, I thought it would be useful to update members on progress at
Airdrie Golf Club since I began my tenure and our new committee got to work.

Before doing that, I have to talk about the challenges we are facing due to what I believe is about to go
down as the wettest winter since records began.

No one wants to see our course closed, but unfortunately this winter has seen us forced to do that far
more often because of saturated ground conditions. It is no consolation, but had the previous
committee not made the wise decision to make the use of mats mandatory in all areas, we would have
been closed far more often. That decision has saved untold damage to our course. Jordan and his team
are tearing their hair out at not being able to present the course at its best, but tis to their huge credit
that when we have been able to play, we have putted on greens that have been absolutely exceptional
for the time of year. I can only thank you, our loyal members, for your patience during this
unprecedented rainfall and hope that Mother Nature smiles on us sometime soon.

On a more positive note, we are grateful to members for showing their support for our revitalised social
schedule. We had a fabulous Burn’s night at the beginning of March, and our ABBA night in April is a
sell out. The dance night in May only has a few tickets left and the psychic night in June is selling well
(who'd have seen that coming!) Our other June social with Holly Fairlie and a wee game of bingo has
just gone on sale, so get your tickets ordered asap. We also hope to see loads of you support Simon's
always brilliant quiz night on Friday 12th April. This is Simon's 20th year as our Club Professional, he is
a fantastic asset to AGC, so come along and show him your support and appreciation.

You will also be aware that we recently announced a change in caterers. We thank Livie's for their
contribution to our club over the last few years but are excited to welcome John and Zoe as they launch
NINETEEN on 5th April. Their menu looks delicious, and I hope that as many members and
non-members alike will come along and sample their food. We wish John, Zoe and NINETEEN every
success - please support them.

I am also absolutely delighted to say that we have seen over 50 new members join the club since the
beginning of the year - welcome every one of you to a fantastic club. T hope as many as possible will
come along to our new member evening on April 5th. Hopefully you will see that there is more to the
club than just a great golf course and you will make full use of our wonderful clubhouse, whether it’s for
a pre or post round drink, great food or to attend our functions.

Iam also pleased to say that Vice Captain Keith McIntyre and I paid a visit to the Maggie's centre at
Monkland’s Hospital last week. It is a wonderful, joyous place that offers support to those impacted by
cancer. We have agreed to work with them to raise awareness of their work and hopefully come up with
some creative ways of helping them raise much needed funds. Watch this space for more details.

So, despite the awful weather, there are lots of things to be really positive about as we embark on
another season of golf. Our club is very much heading in the right direction, and I would like to thank
all members, whether long-standing, brand new or somewhere in-between, for their support and
encouragement. Without you, we don’t have a club, so enjoy the new season, use our clubhouse and
play well.

New Members Evening - Friday 5th April 1900

New Members' Evening - Friday 5th April
The committee has decided to re-introduce the New Members Evening. This will take place on the evening of Friday 5th April in the Clubhouse, at approximately 7:00pm.
Its purpose is to inform new or recently-joined members about the club, various processes like booking, etiquette and general expectations on and off the course here at Airdrie.
There will be short presentations followed by opportunities to ask questions and discuss points.
So, if you're a new member, or you joined in recent years, or even if you're an experienced and long-standing member willing to offer guidance and meet some newer members (or you'd like to refresh your own knowledge), please come along and enjoy a relaxed and informative evening.
Our new caterer, Nineteen, will be offering burger meals for £6.00 per person for those attending the meeting.

Zak Ross wins NextGen Golf's first Junior Open

What a day we had for our very first junior open!
We had players from Dullater, Airdrie, Hayston, Kilsyth, Crow Wood, Drumpellier and Kirkintilloch golf clubs all take part.
It was a titanic tussle that ended in a 2 player play off round the old course at St Andrew’s.
The scoring throughout was epic and everyone that played had such impressive rounds, but there could only be one winner and that was Zak Ross from Airdrie Golf Club
Zak defeated the pre tournament favourite, James Turley from Kilsyth Lennox Golf Club the play off. Third place was Michael Parks from Hayston Golf Club who was unlucky to get pipped by one shot!
Well done everyone involved. Keep your eyes peeled for our next event

Nice article in the trade press about our team and their shiny new machinery. A real investment in the future quality of our course, let’s hope Mother Nature gives us a helping hand between now and the start of the new season.Machinery Investment at AGC

What a group of absolute stars. It wasn’t the victory that we all hoped for, but a third place finish out of six teams, all playing the highest quality golf is quite an achievement. More photos can be found on the AGC website Congratulations to Turnhouse Golf Club who were deserved victors Every one of the team, the parents, supporters and sponsors have contributed so much to give Airdrie Golf Club a season to remember. Thank you all. Thanks again to Ian Telford, Jane Clark and Peter Russell for everything they do to help our junior section go from strength to strength. We are incredibly proud of you all - take a bow.
Congratulations to Calum Watson who defeated Ellie McManus to lift the Logan Trophy, our junior match play championship🏆🏆 In a nail biting final, the match finished all square after 18 holes, with Calum clinching the title when he birdied the first extra hole while Ellie’s birdie attempt narrowly slipped past. Both players have had superb seasons and this was a fitting way to round things off .
Home Nations Inter-Club Championship. Scottish National Semi Finals. They’ve only gone and bloomin’ done it 👏 What a performance from our juniors in horrendous conditions. And on to the final we go. Congratulations to Ellie, Kyle, Lennon, Jack, Brendan and Taylor. AGC is so incredibly proud of you all.
Ladies and gentleman - your 2023 Lanarkshire Junior League Champions - AIRDRIE GOLF CLUB. A fantastic 4.5-1.5 victory over an excellent Strathaven GC team this afternoon means an aggregate victory of 7-5. Every one of the team - expertly led by Calum Watson - played a part in the victory. They have made Airdrie Golf Club incredibly proud and are an absolute credit to our club. Special thanks to Team Manager Ian Telford and Junior Convenors Jane Clark and Peter Russell who have done an outstanding job in developing our junior section. This is a fitting reward for all their hard work .
